Free Tax Prep LA Service Now Available to Angelenos

The 2021 tax-filing season has officially started and will end on April 15th.

For your convenience, FTPLA has identified dozens of sites in particular across the City.

California Earned Income Tax Credit, CalFresh, and the new Young Child Tax Credit Facts

Federal EITC: this refundable credit ranges from $538 to $6,660, depending on the number of qualifying children and the marital filing status. The credit is available to households with adjusted gross incomes ranging from $15,980 to $57,414. For example, a Married Filing Jointly couple with an income of $57,414 with three or more children may qualify for up to $6,660 cash-back.

CalEITC: this refundable credit ranges from $243 to $3,027, depending on the number of qualifying children. The credit is available to households with adjusted gross incomes up to $30,000. For example, a household with three or more children with an income of $30,000 may qualify for up to $3,027 cash-back.

Young Child Tax Credit

Gov. Newson approved the creation of a new tax credit in 2020, the Young Child Tax Credit. The Young Child Tax Credit creates an opportunity for an additional $1,000 in the refund of working parents who have a child younger than age 6.

The Young Child Tax Credit kicks in with the first dollar that a parent earns, and phases out after $25,000 of income.

ITIN workers now qualify for California state tax credits

The state of California has announced that the 2021 tax filing period will include undocumented ITIN filers.

These newly accessible refundable state credits help households earning less than $30,000 reduce their tax burden and even provide cash back. Together, these state credits can add up to over $4,000. This money is not a benefit, it comes from taxes that workers paid on their wages, so claiming it will not impact immigration status. Access to this vital resource is critical for all Californians during the economic downturn caused by the pandemic, but especially for those who have been unable to access relief.
